How I Built a Children’s Picnic Table with DIYZ
Disclosure: This post is in collaboration with the DIYZ® app. All opinions of apps and companies that help me complete DIY projects are my own.
The DIYZ app is free to download and is available in the Apple App Store for iPhone and Google Play for Android. For a limited time, the video-chat feature is FREE!
It’s time to play.
Outdoor play is one of the things that make a happy childhood. Children need opportunities to explore, experiment, discover, practice and create. With two daughters under the age of six, my wife and I felt like we needed to create an outdoor table that could help in their creative process. Although I could easily purchase something from the store, I wanted to build it myself with the assistance of my children. If I built it sturdy enough, maybe my future grandkids and their kids would one day be able to enjoy it as well! It would be a fun challenge to build something that could possibly outlive me. That was one of the reasons why I decided to build a children’s picnic table with the help of the DIYZ app.
The DIYZ app features a large library of DIY projects – providing DIYers of all skill levels with step-by-step guides and segmented videos to tackle home improvement projects with confidence and ease.
I typed “Children’s Picnic Table” into the app and found the perfect project! As I looked at the list of materials needed to complete the project, I realized I was a wood clamp. Luckily, I have some great neighbors (Thanks Kenny!) and was able to easily borrow one. However, if you don’t live next to Kenny, and you are looking to purchase your own items for your home improvement projects, the DIYZ app provides the option to easily purchase tools and materials without leaving the app via Amazon.
Children aren’t the only ones who need unstructured time and space to fuel their imagination. As adults, we can also benefit from activities that require imagination and improvisation. With the DIYZ app, the user-friendly interface easily sparks the imagination. More studies are showing that creativity alters our brain chemistry and can boost our physical and mental health.
I love working with wood. Many people who work with wood – from carpenters and builders to musical instrument makers, and even hobby woodworkers (like myself,) share a love of its natural beauty, flexible strength and ageless appeal. When I work with wood, I often find myself in a place where my mind relaxes and distractions diminish in direct proportion to the amount of sawdust accumulating under my fingernails and on my clothes.
When working on specific wood projects, there are moments when you know exactly what you want to build and how you want the finished product to look. How many other things are this clear cut in life?
However, bringing your actual idea to fruition can often prove to an insurmountable challenge. With the thousands of websites with incomplete directions, unrealistic DIY shows and boastful neighbors (that all seem to be home improvement experts,) sometimes your mental masterpiece ends up looking like a craft show failure. The DIYZ app takes the guesswork out of your project. It was easy to use, but I needed to watch some of the videos multiple times (or a dozen times) to ensure I was making the right cuts on the correct pieces of wood. However, this was easy with the segmented video steps. There was no rewinding or losing my place. Although the videos were helpful, I wish there was a way to see the wood plans and cuts in one simple image. Or maybe I simply need to embrace technology a bit more and trust the process. Either way, the app makes it all easy!
Best of all, help is only a phone call or video-chat away! At one point, I had a question and did a quick video chat. It was great to talk with a Pro Advisor that was already familiar with my project.
The DIYZ app allows users to speak directly with a professional contractor via video-chat or you can simply chat with your Pro over the phone, if you prefer. Users can chat with DIYZ Pro Advisors from 6:00 PM to 1:00 AM ET Monday through Friday. On weekends, DIYZ Pro Advisors are available to help tackle projects from 8:00 AM to 1:00 AM ET.
All of DIYZ’s Pro Advisors are thoroughly vetted professionals, with years of experience in home repair and remodeling. They’ve seen it all in their experience, and can quickly help any DIYer get the job done themselves. They will help users understand the scope of their project, and what tools and materials they need to get started. They can also answer how-to questions that inevitably come up along the way even if you get stuck in the middle of your project.
In today’s society, as consumers, most of us no longer make things, but buy them instead. Instead of fixing things ourselves, we hire someone or simply replace them. The DIYZ app demonstrates the value of rolling up your sleeves by comparing the cost to do-it-yourself versus hiring a professional. By doing it yourself, not only can you gain priceless satisfaction and pride by building something yourself, but you can also sometimes save hundreds of dollars in the process! Download the app, find a project, and get started! What are you waiting for?
The folks at DIYZ love to see your completed projects, so be sure to use the #DIYZ and #GetWise hashtags and follow them on social media!
